Learning to Farm

Some things you just cannot learn in the classroom! One of the many reasons we love homeschooling is that if an opportunity like this arises we can take advantage of it. When Papa asks my boys to help him do something they always jump on it, especially if they know they are going to get paid! 🙂

Team work helps get the job done!

9 Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. 10 If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. –Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

Okay, so my youngest likes to help, too, but there is really only so much he can handle. But, the great teacher that his Papa is…he lets him “help” anyway.  (Side note: He did not get paid for his labor, and he was not happy about that!) 🙂

I look out to see how they are progressing along and I’m missing a kid!

As the truck creeps from behind a small tree I see that my 8 year old is driving the truck! (Keep in mind that this is a diesel truck so it will move forward without pressing the gas, and his feet can hit the brake pedal, no problem.) He was thrilled to get to drive! He tends to be a little on the lazy side when it comes to working, so this was right up his alley!

Not only did they learn the importance of farming hay, driving a truck and tractor, and how you have to work for your pay, they also learned the value of helping others!  Their Papa and Great Uncle needed help to get the job done, or they couldn’t make a profit. Everyone got what they needed and the job was accomplished!  Great day to live in the country!
